The Collaborative Phase I Unit is operated by the Krankenhaus Nordwest and provides a highly specialized environment for early clinical drug development. Embedded within one of Germany’s leading oncology centers and closely linked to the University Cancer Center Frankfurt (UCT Frankfurt), the unit combines comprehensive clinical care, translational expertise, and access to a broad population of patients with advanced malignancies.
The unit focuses on phase I and early phase clinical trials, including first-in-human studies, novel targeted therapies, immunotherapies, antibody-drug conjugates, cellular therapies, and innovative combination strategies. Its close interaction with the Frankfurt Institute of Clinical Cancer Research IKF enables seamless integration of scientific concepts, clinical operations, biomarker programs, and patient recruitment.
A particular strength of the Collaborative Phase I Unit is its integration into a full-service oncology environment, allowing rapid clinical evaluation of new compounds while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and scientific quality. The unit benefits from experienced investigators, multidisciplinary tumor boards, molecular diagnostics, and access to extensive national and international clinical trial networks.
Together, the Collaborative Phase I Unit of Krankenhaus Nordwest and IKF create a unique ecosystem where innovative academic concepts and biotech-driven drug development can be translated efficiently into clinical reality.
The specialized Study Ward provides a specialized clinical environment for the safe conduct of innovative oncology trials, from phase I to complex phase II and III programs.
The unit offers up to 12 inpatient or day-care beds with direct access to intensive care and emergency medicine infrastructure, enabling close clinical monitoring when required. The facilities include dedicated patient rooms, a modern multifunctional treatment area, specialized monitoring equipment, mobile ultrasound and ECG systems, and advanced emergency equipment.
A fully equipped clinical research laboratory located within the unit allows immediate processing and storage of study samples, including centrifugation and temperature-controlled storage capacities down to −80°C.
Integrated into the comprehensive oncology infrastructure of Krankenhaus Nordwest, the unit benefits from direct access to the hospital pharmacy, central laboratory, pathology, radiology, intensive care medicine, medical oncology, and radiation oncology departments.
Together with the Frankfurt Institute of Clinical Cancer Research IKF, the unit provides a unique platform for early drug development, biomarker-driven clinical trials, and collaborative academic–industry research programs.
